American Melodies: Double Stop Solos and Duets For Viola is the first of a two-volume musical celebration of our American heritage. Each volume contains both duet and double stop solo arrangements of five patriotic songs and five folk songs (same titles in both volumes).
Martha's novel concept for students to learn double stops begins by playing duets first, with the identical notes combined and rewritten as a double stop solo on the opposite page. This novel approach to learning double stops is endorsed by Suzuki pioneers, William Preucil Sr. (violist) and violinist, William Starr, in their glowing Forewords. As students play the duets first, their ear is given a nice example to help them along as they learn to play the double stop solos.
Volume I is for students that have never played double stops before (late Suzuki book 3, Bach Bourees, Seitz Concerti) and has no shifting or 4th fingers. You will find lots of 3rds, 6ths and octaves with ringing 3rd fingers.
